Environmental Management

NCR is committed to managing our environmental footprint and protecting the communities where we operate.

Our goals

We have set the ambitious goal to achieve Net-Zero by 2050 by developing science-based plans and targets to help us meet that goal. To help us achieve this goal, we have started working on transitioning our fleet of vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EV).

We strive to minimize our operations’ and products' environmental impact while delivering innovative technologies and solutions designed to support businesses and consumers in their efforts to operate responsibly. And we’re off to a great start.

As we look to make a more significant impact, we commit to doing more, sharing more and measuring more.

Climate action

We understand the valuable role our products and solutions play in our customers’ businesses and the impact that increased efficiency and environmentally friendly design can have at scale.

We also recognize the importance of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas management. That’s why we developed a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory management plan that focuses on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from our global facility and service operations. It’s based on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

We also participate in the annual Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) climate change questionnaire to evaluate our environmental management progress every year. We will continue our participation in this important survey, underscoring our commitment to providing increased transparency concerning our environmental progress.

NCR employees also play a critical role in our environmental management efforts. To date, over 10,000 customer engineers have received a brand-new targeted environmental management system (EMS) training. Where applicable, employees receive additional training on environmental matters that pertain to their job functions.

In 2021 and 2022, our remote monitoring and diagnostics capabilities and other dispatch avoidance programs resulted in 1.1 million eliminated service dispatch trips.

In 2022, we were proud to publicly disclose for the first time our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data, which has been measured and calculated in alignment with the GHG Protocol Standard. Our baseline emissions for 2019-2021 and our 2022 emissions are as follows:

We are committed to continued accuracy and transparency and regularly refine our data collection and calculation methodology. In 2022, our scope 1 and 2 emissions increased with the inclusion of emissions related to our recent Cardtronics acquisition, improvements in data collection systems and enhancements of our calculation and reporting methodologies.

Workplace enhancements

We conduct all aspects of business in an environmentally sound manner worldwide, including making responsible upgrades to our real estate portfolio to drive reductions in resource use.

Our recent environmental initiatives include enhancements to facility design and capital improvement. This includes the addition of energy-efficient lighting, water usage reductions and certification with sustainable building programs, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

The NCR Global Headquarters in Midtown Atlanta has been awarded two LEED Platinum certifications:

  • Building Design and Construction: Core & Shell and Interior Design
  • Construction: Commercial Interiors (NCR)

And our new headquarters in Belgrade, Serbia, which houses a similar number of employees as NCR global headquarters, has obtained its LEED certification after opening in 2021.

Further, as part of the Cardtronics Acquisition, the warehouse in Houston, Texas, and a major facility in Frisco, Texas, each use natural light and energy-efficient LED lighting to reduce energy consumption and are also LEED certified.

Finally, we proudly maintain ISO 14001 certification in our Chennai, India manufacturing facility. ISO 14001 is the international standard that supports organizations working to improve their environmental performance through an environmental management system. Considering these efforts, we believe we’re making solid strides in managing our environmental footprint – but the work is just getting started. And we’ll continue to elevate our external targets, metrics and environmentally focused disclosures to increase NCR’s transparency with our stakeholders.
