AN INTERVIEW WITH
When choosing to join NCR nearly six years ago, my focus was to understand NCR’s culture. I learned then, and this remains true today, that NCR embraces a collaborative teamwork environment, an innovative approach to solving problems and shared success. I recall a time when we closed a significant customer deal and the general manager made sure we all felt valued and a part of the win. We put the customer first. Plus, we have fun!
Find an area of law that aligns with your passion. For me, that means being forward-focused, agile and able to execute quickly to balance the business needs with the potential legal risk. It also means having a strong moral and ethical compass in times when there may not be clear answers. Also, a mentor can foster personal growth and development.
The nature of my work often involves high-level, technical and abstract issues and hypothetical legal risks. Developing creative solutions energizes me. I find that successfully integrating work with other core values such as giving back to the community as a board member of the NCR Foundation provides a great sense of balance. While I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling to better understand global cultures.
My parents, who were both educators, instilled a love of learning that inspires me to keep up with an ever-changing industry. They encouraged me to constantly learn and to find new challenges, to get out of my comfort zone and grow. Technology evolves so we must learn and grow with it.
Five years ago, I had the opportunity to become NCR’s Chief Privacy Officer. Privacy can be a complex topic in an uncertain environment of evolving regulations, so I have made education a priority. Understanding of the importance of education, I spend significant time teaching about privacy and sharing knowledge with 150 privacy champions at NCR. Also, I led the development of a new privacy-focused intranet site featuring business enablement tools and on-demand training that makes complex topics digestible and approachable for everyone.
NCR is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. We believe in understanding and respecting differences among all people. Serving as a senior advisor to the NCR UNITED business resource group has been meaningful and fulfilling. We have been able to deliver important programming and increase membership – both in Atlanta and our global employment hubs. Being a part of this group helps to drive a sense of belonging, while also providing critical visibility, for NCR’s LGBTQIA+ community.
The role of an in-house lawyer is to sit at the intersection of business and law. As NCR transforms, we support the business strategy by advising on the development of new products, counseling on local requirements to unlock new markets, building trust with customers through thoughtful negotiation and formulating risk assessments.
Over the past several years, I have supported NCR on legal, corporate, commercial and regulatory issues related to our banking and commerce technology businesses. By simplifying data privacy and compliance terms, we accelerate the closing of customer deals. Further, by emphasizing appropriate risk allocation, we can minimize legal exposure from platforms and help generate better customer experiences.
