AN INTERVIEW WITH

Bura Iruku

Software Engineer, Joined NCR in 2021

Tell us a little about your career journey. Where are you from? What is your role at NCR?

I studied computer science at Georgia Tech and my initial interest in NCR started due to its proximity to Georgia Tech’s campus. In 2019, I interviewed in between classes and was offered an internship offer for the summer of 2020. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, I was extremely nervous about the state of the internship, especially since it was my last summer before I graduated.

“NCR’s commitment to keep the internship showed how important UR’s efforts were, and I knew then that this was a company I wanted to work for because it honored its commitments.

My current role is software engineer on an Aloha Cloud team. My projects have changed many times since joining, and I have enjoyed when they change because they allow me to see different parts of NCR’s services.

“The culture of innovation at NCR has given me the opportunity to participate in creative solutions that expand what we can offer to our customers.”

When you received the job offer, what did you consider before accepting?

One of the biggest contributing factors for accepting my full-time offer from NCR was what my day-to-day project work would look like.

“By starting my career on an innovation team, I knew that I would learn a lot and get to see a lot of parts of NCR’s products.”

This was important to me starting my career while I still try and figure out what I enjoy best.

Outside of the job description, what other important questions did you seek to have answered prior to making your decision?

In previous internships, it was hard for me to relate to coworkers due to being the only girl or person of color on my team. I aspired to be at a company and on a team where I could relate to others and find community.

What inspires you to come to work every day?

My favorite part of working at NCR is my team. We have regular team lunches and outings and there is always something to look forward to.

“Having teammates that are friends also makes it easier to work, communicate, ideate and learn together.”

What is one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had while working at NCR?

Some of my favorite memories are working with NCR’s partnership with the Atlanta Science Festival. For the festival this year, I helped plan NCR’s activity and volunteered all day at the event. I also participate in ASF’s STEM Professional School Partnership which pairs STEM professionals with teachers to show students insights into STEM careers. For this program, I have created activities and led them for students at Forest Park Middle School. I enjoy participating in this program to inspire students to one day have a career in computer science.

Outside of work, what are you most often doing/where are you most likely to be found?

Outside of work, I like exploring Atlanta with my friends and family, watching movies, hiking, playing sports or attending sports games.

“I am a big Atlanta United fan and love frequenting Mercedes Benz for games.”

I’m also really enjoying going to movie theaters again, I have a movie pass with my sister and go once a week.

What advice would you give to yourself if you could go back to your first day at NCR?

If I could go back to my first day at NCR, I would advise myself to network with other teams sooner. Through coffee chats and/or BRGs it is easy to meet people and find mentors. Meeting others also provides more insight into how NCR’s products work.

How are you helping NCR to transform, connect and run the business in your role?

I am currently working on an Aloha Cloud team, managing data integrations. I enjoy working on a customer-facing product that helps small businesses cater to their customers.
