It has been an interesting path to NCR—my first role as a florist, creating beautiful flower displays is so very different to my current role today. Following my time as a florist, I worked for a hotel chain as a receptionist. I was unsatisfied and planning to leave when my general manager saw potential and offered me a role managing HR and payroll for a small hotel. That grew to manage HR for a small group of hotels. It was interesting, however, I longed for a large corporate job that could give me more opportunities for development and growth. Then I landed a role as an employee relations advisor for Cardtronics. When NCR acquired Cardtronics, I was integrated into the employee relations and labor relations team. I really wanted to dip my toes back into the generalist HR realm, and fortunately found support to shift to a people partner role for multiple functions in the UK. This role then expanded to support the Republic of Ireland and Belgium. Today, my daily responsibilities are incredibly varied in the exciting role of a people partner—from supporting managers and employees to working on multiple projects, there is never a dull moment! I believe growth and continual development are key to a great career, so I can’t wait to see what exciting opportunities the future has in store!
I wanted to join the United business resource group (BRG) to speak with other LGBTQIA+ employees and feel a sense of belonging and community. It has been a wonderful experience as I have been able to connect with other LGBTQIA+ colleagues who have similar, relatable experiences to my own. I gain strength from their stories, whether through their struggles or successes. United continuously supports me to feel empowered to bring my most authentic self, organizing so many wonderful initiatives and partnering with other BRGs to give LGBTQIA+ a voice and a safe place throughout NCR.
By being vulnerable, real, open and honest. We can only bring our best selves and have meaningful discussions and engagement when we are being our most true selves at work and everywhere else in our lives. And, for allies wanting to engage with the LGBTQIA+ community—just showing up as an ally, wanting to learn more about LGBTQIA+ people is a great start! If you come with good intentions, much can’t go wrong. Don’t let worrying about saying or doing the wrong thing stop you from engaging or learning!
Pride means being unapologetically you, hitting that drum to your own rhythm and soon having people dancing along with you. It means standing up for what’s right, even if you sometimes feel you are standing alone. And feeling proud of your identity, no matter what!
I have a collection of so many memorable experiences at NCR. My most impactful memory is the United BRG, EMEA LGBTQIA+ Pride panel I was part of—I’ve never felt so much support and love and it still warms my heart. My colleagues and manager have also been kind and wonderful allies. I couldn’t ask for more.
Definitely by supporting employee engagement because as we say at NCR, happy employees = happy customers. I also help NCR transform, connect and run our business when I work on IDEAS and support mental health, whether that be supporting the implementation of mental health training to better equip our people managers or supporting the business with implementing projects and best practices to support our people in doing their best to realize NCR's strategy.
